While we all celebrate the 4th of July a little differently, most of us will be enjoying a long weekend filled with delicious food, quality time with family and friends, and maybe a few fireworks. Whether you’re gearing up for a big celebration or planning something more intimate, we hope you enjoy a safe holiday weekend free of worries and bugs!
Ah yes, bugs. You didn’t honestly think we wouldn’t have something to say about the summer pests that notoriously crash outdoor parties, did you? Whether by the pool, on the deck, or spread out across the lawn, in order to keep your Independence Day weekend from being spoiled by bugs, here are a few ways you can make your property and festivities less attractive.
Minimize wasp encounters
You never know when an impromptu game of whiffle ball could occur or if you’re planning on playing cornhole or other yard games, you’ll want to keep an eye out for wasps nests in the ground or in shrubs. You should also inspect for wasp nests on your home, under the deck, and anywhere you think your partygoers might hang out.
Though it’s early in the season and their natural food sources are still plenty, wasps and other stinging insects in New Jersey might come calling if there are cans of soda and sugary treats to enjoy. To discourage stinging insects, make sure you keep food covered, sip from cups or cover cans, and pick up food and trash.
Discourage mosquito activity
Mosquitoes are most active from dusk until dawn so there’s a chance that you might have to fight mosquitoes for at least a portion of the time your party is in progress. To discourage mosquitoes and to avoid mosquito bites, we recommend guests wear an EPA-approved insect repellant on exposed skin and clothing, keep doors and windows closed, and make sure you remove any standing water before the party starts.
Don’t tempt ants
As America’s #1 pest problem it makes sense that these particular insects would want to enjoy the 4th of July – it’s almost their civic duty. Well, not really and if we’re being honest, ants in New Jersey have never made an outdoor picnic or BBQ more enjoyable. In fact, they’re more of a pain in the backside than anything else. To prevent odorous house ants and other species from crashing your party you should eliminate the temptation. That means picking up crumbs, wiping up drink spills, covering drinks and food, and really just keeping tables and food prep areas clean.
