Some people really like spiders, but most do not. Even the ones that we know are harmless, and in some cases beneficial (fewer mosquitoes, yay!), still cause a little shudder when we encounter them. This is especially true when we find them inside our New Jersey homes.
Although you can find spiders in your house at any time of year, when the weather gets cold, you may see them more often, as they attempt to find a warm place to survive the winter and a steady food source.
Some common spiders that get inside at this time of year are:
House spiders - These spiders are probably the most common of all. They’re light in color with long legs. House spiders are not dangerous, but they do enjoy building and abandoning webs, leaving your home looking like you’ve just decorated for Halloween.
Jumping spiders - If normal spiders give you the heebie-jeebies, jumping spiders take that fear up several notches. There’s something unsettling about getting near a spider and having it suddenly jump on you. Jumping spiders are dark in color, active during the day and, although they can bite, they rarely do.
Wolf spiders - Wolf spiders get their name from the way they hunt their prey. They don’t catch insects in webs like other spiders. Instead, they prefer to chase down their meals. Wolf spiders are dark, hairy, and fast. They, too, can bite, but rarely do.
Despite knowing that they’re not dangerous, spiders can be a nuisance when they get inside your home. They spin webs everywhere, jump out at you when you’re not expecting it, and they hide in your stored belongings. The presence of spiders can indicate another pest problem since spiders need a food source in order to survive. If they can’t find one in your home, they’re likely to move on.
Although it’s impossible to keep your home 100% spider-free, there are some things you can do to make it less likely that they’ll want to come inside on their own:
