Recently the National Pest Management Association released its Spring & Summer 2021 Bug Barometer® and it comes as no surprise that ticks, mosquitoes and ants as well as the emergence of Brood X cicadas are forecasted for the Northeast in the coming weeks and months. In fact, we’ve already mentioned a couple of these pests in previous blogs and today we’re going to dive in deeper and talk about the bugs that our local pest control pros here at Arrow anticipate seeing in the next few months in and around homes in Millburn, Maplewood, and Westfield as well as throughout Essex, Hudson, Mercer, Middlesex, Monmouth, Morris, Ocean, Somerset, and Union counties.
Termites & Carpenter Ants
Unfortunately, these wood-destroying pests top our list because they are both serious pest problems in our service area; ones that will only grow exponentially as the weather grows warmer.
As we mentioned in our blogs, Late Winter & Early Spring Pest Pressures In New Jersey and Termite Activity Increasing As Temperatures In New Jersey Rise, termites are already active. In fact, they never stopped eating away at the wood in New Jersey homes. Sure, you may not have noticed a termite infestation in your home over the winter but remember, termites often avoid detection for YEARS, not simply just a season.
While carpenter ants remain largely dormant during the winter months, it is common to see a carpenter ant explosion once the outdoor temperatures warm up in the spring. Carpenter ants are a two-fold problem, they’ll damage wood when creating nesting sites and they’ll become a problem in kitchens and other areas both inside and out when they forage for food.
Property owners in New Jersey can expect to see termites and carpenter ants during the months of April, May, and June.
Ticks
There are several types of ticks in New Jersey and it is with regret that we have already started to see these biting, disease-spreading pests in many communities. In fact, several of our team members have already pulled ticks off of their dogs. Really, if you spend anytime outdoors, you should resume tick checks immediately.
Tick activity will really ramp up in April as the sun warms us up even more than it has been and the snow disappears until next winter. These biting insects will start reproducing and then you’ll have adult ticks, eggs, and nymphs to contend with on your property. As they grow more active, the threat of Lyme disease and other tick-borne illness will also increase.
Property owners in New Jersey can expect to see ticks in April, May, and June as well as in the months following.
Mosquitoes
Another menace to society during the spring and summer months, mosquito activity is expected to explode in May once the warmer temperatures have proven they’re going to stick around. Not shy pests, mosquitoes are likely to drive residents indoors with their annoying bites that also have the ability to transmit serious illness including West Nile virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis.
Property owners in New Jersey can expect to see mosquito activity start in May, continue to ramp up through June, and extend into the summer months.
Fleas
Yet another biting pest on tap for the spring and summer forecast, fleas are the bane of every pet owner’s existence but they are not the only ones affected. Did you realize that flea infestations can occur in homes where there are no pets? It’s true. Fleas can make their way indoors by simply using their above average jumping ability, by hitching a ride on a person’s shoe or pant leg, or even by hitching a ride on a rodent that sneaks indoors through a gap under the garage door.
Property owners in New Jersey can expect to see fleas in the coming weeks and especially in June and through the summer months.
How to keep NJ pests away from your home and off your property this spring and summer

Seasonal mosquito & tick reduction program
Our Bite Back! Program is a seasonal program that was developed to significantly reduce the populations of mosquitoes and ticks during the months when these pests are most active in New Jersey. In April and October, we’ll broadcast a granular tick treatment that exterminates adult ticks as well as larvae and nymphs. May through September, one of our highly trained and fully licensed pest management specialists will render a misting treatment to areas where these pests breed and rest in your backyard.
