NJ Homeowners Finding Clover Mites In Pool & Other Pests Around House

Dealing with bugs can be irritating. Finding tiny red bugs in and around the pool or tiny jumping insects that look like fleas inside your home is disconcerting and yet it happens every spring in New Jersey. Clover mites, springtails, silverfish and centipedes are just a few of the occasional invaders that show up in Essex and Union counties once the warm weather arrives and while they’re relatively harmless and are around only for a little while, they are certainly nuisance bugs. And ones Arrow Pest Control can help eliminate.

Why do I have clover mites?

Clover mites are plant feeders that live a relatively short life – about two weeks outdoors. Inside they may not live more than 48 hours unless moisture is available. Harmless mites, they are attracted to light colored paint, aluminum siding, and other highly reflective surfaces; they are also very likely to be found in large numbers on the sunny sides of homes in New Jersey.

You may have a clover mite infestation because these tiny red bugs crawled their way onto your property.  It’s also possible that wind carried them across your boundary lines or even a heavy rain could have introduced them.  Another possibility is that your fertilized lawn lured them to your property.  Dandelions, daffodils, primrose, phlox, and clover will also attract these nuisance pests but they will not venture into your yard for geraniums, zinnias, or mums.

What attracts springtails and why they are in the house

Springtails are those little black jumping bugs that are attracted to leaf litter, moss, decaying wood, and fungi.  They are often found in soil as well as damp or moist places.

If the outside becomes too dry, springtails may move indoors to find a moister environment.  It is common to find them in houseplants (especially over-watered ones), damp basements, bathrooms, and kitchens.

Silverfish in the bathroom & other places you may find silverfish

Like springtails, silverfish love damp environments which makes bathrooms the perfect spot for these moisture loving insects. That’s not the only place you’ll find springtails though. In fact, it’s not uncommon to find them in:

  • Kitchens
  • Crawlspaces
  • Garages
  • Laundry rooms
  • Other areas where the humidity levels are high

Where can you find centipedes in your house?

As is the case with the other occasional invaders we’ve discussed, house centipedes prefer damp areas, the darker the better.  Basements, closets, and bathrooms are a few of the more common places to find house centipedes inside homes.  Although centipedes in New Jersey are harmless (house centipede stings are not as toxic as other species and rarely occur) they could be a sign of a more significant pest problem.

House centipedes feed on other insects including roaches, silverfish, crickets, and flies.  If there’s a food source present, these bugs tend to be active.
