House Spiders
What house spiders look like?
Though house spiders in New Jersey range in color, it is common to find yellowish-brown to gray ones lurking in and around homes. They may have dark chevron markings on their bodies and legs as well. These itsy-bitsy spiders grow up to 5/16th of an inch in length, stand tall on eight legs but don’t have the best eyesight despite the fact that they have several eyes.
Where you’ll find house spiders
Common house spiders create webs in areas where they are likely to catch flies and other bugs. Corners of rooms, basements, crawlspaces, and garages are popular spots to find these arachnids. It is also commonplace to find their cobwebs attached to outdoor lighting, corners of porches, and other areas where they prey are prone to wander.

Jumping spiders
What do jumping spiders look like?
Here in New Jersey, you can find jumping spiders in all sorts of color varieties including black, brown, and gray. No matter what color combination, they usually have pale markings on their bodies and legs. Jumping spiders also have eight short yet powerful jumping legs and eight eyes.
Where you’ll find jumping spiders
Unlike house spiders that build webs, jumping spiders hunt their prey and are what you might call active daytime hunters. They are often found “hunting” in grass and tall, dense vegetation and also inside in areas where they are likely to find prey. Under furniture, in cracks of the floor, and around doors and windows are just a few of the places where you might find jumping spiders.
Can jumping spiders hurt you?
Jumping spiders are venomous but their venom is not usually strong enough to cause a reaction in people. They are more of a nuisance spider than a threat to health or property.
Other spiders worth mentioning
In New Jersey, there have been sightings of wolf spiders and black widow spiders (click here for information about these venomous spiders) but they are not a major concern in Essex and Union counties as well as throughout Arrow’s service area.
