What do brown recluse spiders look like?
Adult brown recluse spiders, depending on their exact species, can range in color from a yellowish-gray to dark black. Their abdomen is covered in gray hairs and their long legs are darker than their body. Their bodies grow to between ¼ and 3/8 of an inch in length, and their leg span reaches between 1 and 1 ½ inches. Other distinctive features of the brown recluse spider include the “violin-like” pattern that is found on the top of their body and their 3 pairs of eyes that are arranged in a semi-circle.
Are brown recluse spiders dangerous?
Brown recluse spiders can be very dangerous if they decide to bite! Like the black widow, the brown recluse is a venomous spider. The venom that they inject causes pain and itching at the bite site and can cause the tissue around the bite to ulcerate and die. It can take months for the skin around a bite to heal. It is important that you seek immediate attention from your health care provider if you think you have been bitten by a brown recluse spider. The good news when it comes to these spiders is that while they are dangerous, they are not aggressive and generally only bite if they are being directly threatened.
