- Ways You Can Get Rid Of Spiders In Your Home
Tired of sharing your New Jersey home with spiders?
There’s something about spiders, or specifically walking through a spider web, that brings out the inner ninja in us all. Yes, they’re creepy with their eight-legs and eight eyes and yes, discovering a web with your face is not the best way to start or end your day, and not all spiders in New Jersey are harmless but… spiders aren’t all bad. In fact, as a natural predator of bugs, they can be helpful in controlling insect populations. Perhaps there are more favorable attributes we could highlight but really the bottom line is this- most homeowners really don’t like the idea of sharing their home with spiders regardless of their merits. So how do you get rid of spiders that have infested your home? Let’s take a look.
Types of spiders in New Jersey
Why you might have a spider problem in your home
Before we dive into the topic of spider extermination, let’s discuss why your home is a magnet for spider activity. There could be a few explanations as to why you have spiders in, on, or around your home. Here are a few of the most common reasons.
Easy access
Simply put, spiders may have sauntered in through a gap under a door or a tear in a screen. Any opening on the exterior of your home could be a way inside for opportunistic spiders.
Availability of prey
If you have pests already active inside your home, you can be sure spiders won’t leave. Why would they when they have an all you can eat buffet inside the house?
Accidental entry
Sometimes spiders enter homes quite by accident. For example, it’s actually more common than you might think to find spiders mixed in with the produce at the grocery store. In fact, there are have been many reports of shoppers finding black widow spiders in their grapes upon returning home. Spiders may also arrive on or in boxes or other items you carry into your home.
Clutter
Spiders, and other pests for that matter, often hang out in areas where clutter is present. It allows them the safety and security they need in order to go about their business (which often includes reproducing, unfortunately). This is especially true in attics and storage areas where holiday decorations are stored as well as cast offs from home decorating, clothing you aren’t ready to part with, and other common stored belongings.

Keep spider outs with these pest prevention tips
The following spider prevention tips, in conjunction with a year-round pest control program, are the best way to prevent spiders from infesting your property. While not an exhaustive list, we think you’ll find it helpful and achievable.
Seal up your home
As we mentioned already, spiders take advantage of holes, gaps, and other openings they find on the outside of your home. This could be at ground level but it could also be above the roofline. Sealing up any potential entry point is imperative if you want to keep unwanted houseguests out. Excuse the maritime idiom but closing openings from stem to stern should be your objective. Using tools such as caulk, sealant, and wire mesh, you should fill all gaps and cracks and close openings around utility lines into the house. You should also mend or replace window and door screens that are torn, fix larger holes (or hire a contractor to do so if that’s outside your skillset or if you simply don’t have the time) install a chimney cap, make sure your vent has a damper designed to keep bugs out, and install weather stripping on garage doors and entry doors.
De-clutter
Organizing and eliminating items you no longer need is a great way to prevent pests inside your home. You should focus your de-cluttering efforts not only inside the house but also in the garage, in sheds or other outbuildings, and even in your yard (think old tires, kid’s toys, empty plant pots, etc.)
Turn off exterior lights
Outdoor lighting often attracts bug which of course attracts spiders. Keep all creepy crawly things away by shutting of the light on the porch or over the garage. Alternatively, you could purchase outdoor lighting that is designed to NOT attract bugs. If you decide to pursue this line of prevention, make sure to research the correct bulb color. You should also look into how brightness and heat emitted influence pest activity.
Become an expert food inspector
Before you bring food home from the grocery store, inspect it for any evidence of spiders or other bugs. At home, you should look it over closely again AND wash fruits and other produce thoroughly and right away. We also recommend storing food in containers that pests cannot get into.
Make outdoor improvements
If your woodpile is on the porch or against a house wall, we recommend moving it straight away as there are many hiding places for spiders, insects, and even mice. The best advice is to move it several feet away from your home. You should also trim back shrubs and other landscape elements so that they do not touch any part of your home, pick up fruit that has fallen from trees, harvest your garden, wipe away webs on the house, and sweep the deck and other outside surfaces often.
